When we lift our voices in song to God we join a list of good company. The Bible records songs that we sung by David, Moses, Miriam, Simeon, Zechariah, Deborah, Isaiah, Mary, and even our Lord Jesus Christ. Singing can act as confession, lament, praise, thanksgiving, history telling, exhortation, prayer, and petition. The texts of the pieces we sing are usually chosen for a particular purpose, according to the church calendar, the lectionary readings, and the sermon topic.
At St. Alban’s we are striving for excellence in all that we do. This is especially true for music, since it is such a prominent part of our worship. To that end, choir members are asked to give significant time, energy, and effort to the success of the choir.
You do not have to be a professional trained singer to join the St. Alban’s Choir. What is required is a willing heart, a desire to make a joyful noise unto the Lord, and a good work ethic. Some of the pieces we perform will be challenging to learn and prepare, but many people find that with the help of rehearsals and the support of those around them, they can rise to the task. And always, we offer our music in a spirit of humility, knowing that no matter what level of musical excellence we attain, it is God’s grace that allows us to serve him.
